Tidbits

  • Sleepover at Ikea - Maybe this is the only way to get to the $1 early enough…

  • A ramen bath - Japanese spa with special baths resembling instant noodles.  I wanna play!

  • Old age homes for dogs - 1) Old dogs don’t like to be abandoned at strange places.  2) Playing with young puppies will probably cause the older dogs to die faster due to exhaustion.

  • A remote-controlled pigeon - Oh the poor thing…

  • An article on a brilliant method of teaching grade schoolers about bats and rabies.  I smell a lawsuit.

  • Will trade beer for Crumpler bags.  Tempted by the beanbag and messenger bags…

So that’s why everyone was standing outside…

So after class Monday, Mike and I decided to wander around the main Nanjing shopping district (Xinjiekou) to look for textbooks, of all things.  We found an entire two story store for foreigners, and were able to pick up some CD’s and books for the series we use at UW.  Anyways, when we were wandering around lost, we saw a lot of people just milling around on the streets.  It looked like they had to be evacuated from their buildings, but we did not see any fire or other emergency vehicles around.  We dismissed it as perhaps it’s normal for that many people to hang around the streets in the middle of the day.  Turns out that there was a giant earthquake in Sichuan, which we didn’t know about until I read the Star that night.  We don’t listen to the Chinese news here, but it still surprise me how little reaction/notice we got about it.  Being here, it’s so easy to be completely oblivious to not just what’s happening in the world right now, but also within the same country.

I went out on a spontaneous female shopping trip in the middle of writing this post and forgot what I wanted to write about by the time I got back.  I’ll just mention that the mosquitoes in some areas here like me a lot more than they like Mike, and it sucks.

Going to visit the Confucius Temple on Wednesday and Shanghai for the weekend.  I still need to write about the attractions I’ve been to.  In the mean time, continue to check flickr for photos.
