Tidbits

  • Sleepover at Ikea - Maybe this is the only way to get to the $1 early enough…

  • A ramen bath - Japanese spa with special baths resembling instant noodles.  I wanna play!

  • Old age homes for dogs - 1) Old dogs don’t like to be abandoned at strange places.  2) Playing with young puppies will probably cause the older dogs to die faster due to exhaustion.

  • A remote-controlled pigeon - Oh the poor thing…

  • An article on a brilliant method of teaching grade schoolers about bats and rabies.  I smell a lawsuit.

  • Will trade beer for Crumpler bags.  Tempted by the beanbag and messenger bags…

One day international business trips sorta sucks

August 29, 2008, 5:28 am

So finally went on my first official business trip last week and I have to say, unless you can spend the weekend there at your own leisure, it’s not particularly fun.  The schedule was like this: 3 am wake up, 3:30 pick up by coworker.  Arrived at airport at like 5:30 for 8:19 flight.  Flight was only one and a half hours, barely enough to fall asleep.  Driven from airport to customer office.  Presentations all day.  Lunch was catered to the meeting room.  (Though we never got grilled veggie wraps at OUR meetings...yum) Day ended at like 3:30 pm, and the flight was not until 8:30.  Host took us to dinner, had bison burger, dropped off at airport around 7.  Boarded on time and SAT on the runway for like half an hour.  I was sleeping by then, but I heard snatches of announcements that sounded like the control tower loosing everyone’s flight plans.  Still arrived in Toronto more or less on time at 10 pm.  Back to Waterloo, delay on 401 due to construction, and didn’t get home until midnight.

Seriously, I don’t understand how our sales guys do it.  These short haul, one day flights are so tiring.  I mean, the flight itself is short, but the waiting time doubles that.

Heh, the Canadian customs conservation went like this:

Customs dude: What do you do?
Me: I’m a developer.
Customs dude: ...of what?
Me: Software.
Customs dude: Oh ok!  *Stamp!*

Ha, that’s all he needed to know…

In other news...

The rest of August was generally uneventful otherwise.  It rained too much on weekends to really do anything big.  Had TWO company golf days (mine and Mike’s).  Still not that great, but at least I hit the ball now more than the ground.  Though now I’m tempted to get new clubs just cause our current set really does suck, extra stress and all.  Not much plans for this long weekend either, but perhaps a real hiking trip will happen in Sept.  If it stops raining.

Don’t salespeople do that, then get a day off in return? There’s usually some perks in travel jobs.

Multi-day business trips aren’t much better, you don’t really recover from the early morning wake up til about Wednesday or Thursday at which point it’s time to go home.
