Tidbits

  • Sleepover at Ikea - Maybe this is the only way to get to the $1 early enough…

  • A ramen bath - Japanese spa with special baths resembling instant noodles.  I wanna play!

  • Old age homes for dogs - 1) Old dogs don’t like to be abandoned at strange places.  2) Playing with young puppies will probably cause the older dogs to die faster due to exhaustion.

  • A remote-controlled pigeon - Oh the poor thing…

  • An article on a brilliant method of teaching grade schoolers about bats and rabies.  I smell a lawsuit.

  • Will trade beer for Crumpler bags.  Tempted by the beanbag and messenger bags…

Food Review: Johnny Fresco

January 16, 2007, 7:47 pm

Johnny Fresco
244 Weber St North,
Waterloo, ON

One might wonder why such a prime location as Weber and University can have no students there during lunch time on a normal weekday.  When we walked in, half the tables were occupied, but they were all obviously non-students.  And for good reason.

Johnny Fresco is a pita and burger place (Fresh burgers!  Fresh Pita!), with colourful and “fun” decor, and weird cartoon drawings of a chicken and a pig.  The menu, however, was uninspired and expensive.  $6.25 for a swiss chicken pita melt?  The gyros place at University plaza used to do TWO pitas for $5.  I picked the most unique item on the menu: a Burger Pita.  Which is a pita filled with the regular toppings, and cut up burger patty.  The toppings may be fresh, but the meat was overcooked.  $2+ to make it a combo, which came with fries and canned pop.

Lunch for two, with two pitas, a single order of fries, and one pop, was $15!!  And the pitas were pretty bland and tasteless.

I suspect the people who goes there prolly never go to University Plaza, and had any sort of ethnic food, or something.  As we were leaving, from what I can see, this lady was up at the counter sampling tzatziki sauce from a spoon.  She said that it was really good, and the owner said something about why yes, a lot of people like it.  Lady, have you never heard of tzatziki before??  Yeah, those are the people who would go there, cause the food is just so “funky” and “new”.

And I’m sure all the students tried it once, and never went back.  We certainly won’t.
